State Council debates draft Biometrics Law

MUSCAT: The State Council debated the draft Biometrics Law referred by the Council of Ministers, on Monday.


Besides, the State Council discussed a study submitted by the Culture, Media and Tourism Committee on Arts and their Role in Supporting the National Economy.

The State Council held its seventh meeting of the seventh annual session under the chairmanship of Shaikh Abdulmalik Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council, on Monday.


Dr Rashid bin Salim al Badi, head of the Legal Committee, delivered a statement in which he said that the committee values the draft Biometrics Law due to lack of legislations governing the collection, preservation and utilization of biological data and regulating the utilization of biotechnology and the protection of genetic data in the Sultanate of Oman.

He added that the committee discussed the draft law, the opinion of Majlis Ash’shura, and the observations made by the members of the council and prepared a report that includes formal and substantive observations about the articles of the draft Biometrics Law, noting that the committee proposed some amendments on other articles.


The meeting witnessed elaborate discussions by the council members on the draft Biometrics Law.

The council then discussed the study presented by the Culture, Media and Tourism Committee on Arts and their Role in Supporting the National Economy. Dr Aisha bint Hamad al Darmakiyah, Chairperson of the Culture, Media and Tourism Committee, explained the importance of the sector in supporting the national economy and diversifying revenue sources. — ONA
