The inspiring growth of the Omani SME private sector

Oman, the beautiful country situated on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and that I had the honour to call home for a few years, has a thriving entrepreneurial spirit that has been the backbone of its economic growth. Omani citizens are known for their ability to see opportunities where others see challenges and their willingness to take risks in pursuit of their dreams.

The late Sultan Qaboos, who ruled Oman for almost fifty years, was a strong believer in entrepreneurship and the organic development of the private sector. He encouraged Omani citizens to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams and provided them with the necessary support and resources to turn their ideas into successful businesses. Through various government initiatives, the Sultanate of Oman began a process of diversifying away from its reliance on oil and encouraging the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

One such initiative is the National Business Centre (NBC), which was established in 2013 to support and develop Omani entrepreneurs. The NBC offers training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to Omani entrepreneurs, and it has played a significant role in the success of many Omani startups.

Another initiative — which I was proudly part of as a mentor —is the Riyada programme, which aims to support the development of SMEs in Oman. The programme offers a range of services, including business incubation, access to finance, and training and development programmes.

Thanks to these initiatives and the support of the Omani government, the entrepreneurial scene in Oman has flourished, with many success stories emerging from the country in recent years.

Here are three of the best entrepreneurial ideas pitched to me by Omani entrepreneurs in the past decade: One entrepreneur who embodies this spirit of innovation is Ibrahim. He founded a digital marketing agency when social media was still a nascent industry, demonstrating his ability to spot trends before they became mainstream. With his skills in digital marketing, Ibrahim was able to help businesses establish a strong online presence and grow their customer base, showing the power of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Another example of entrepreneurial success in Oman is Maryam. She identified a gap in the market for high-quality, locally sourced ingredients for use in traditional Omani cuisine. By sourcing ingredients directly from local farmers and producers, Maryam was able to offer a unique product that quickly gained a following among chefs and home cooks alike. Her success highlights the importance of creativity and supporting local businesses.

Nur is another Omani entrepreneur who has demonstrated a remarkable ability to identify opportunities and turn them into successful businesses. She founded a health-conscious cafe that offers a range of vegan options while maintaining Halal food at the core of her menu. With her focus on healthy, sustainable food and her ability to provide a unique experience for customers, Nur has built a thriving business that is helping to promote healthier eating habits in Oman.

These three examples showcase the entrepreneurial spirit that is thriving in Oman today. By continuing to support entrepreneurship and innovation, Oman can continue to diversify its economy and build a brighter future for all its citizens. With the government's ongoing support and the creativity and drive of its citizens, Oman is well-positioned for even greater success in the years to come.
