Oman finish runners-up at AVC Continental Cup

Oman beach volleyball team claimed the runners-up finish in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Continental Cup Phase 1 Western Zone on Thursday night after they lost in the overall final 2-1 against hosts Qatar at the Al Gharafa Beach Complex.


With the victory, Qatar captured the men’s title while Oman team picked up silver. Palestine concluded their Asian campaign in third place with bronze medal. Despite the loss in the final clash, Oman men’s team still keep their hopes alive to secure slot in the AVC Continental Cup Finals as it is linked to compete in Phase 2 and win a berth in the Finals.


The Qatari triumph meant they confirmed their presence in the AVC Continental Cup Finals (Phase 3) which acts as the final qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.


In the thrilling final, Qatari duo Cherif and Ahmed started the first match strongly as they managed to beat Oman’s Hood al Jalbubi and Mazin al Hashami 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) in 34 minutes to deliver the hosts their first win.


In the following match, Oman’s pair comprised of Ahmed al Hosni and Haitham al Shuraiqi made it 1-1 as they beat Qatar’s Abdallah Nassim and Mahmoud Essam 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) in similar 34 minutes.


Later in the deciding game, Qatar’s terrific duo Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, FIVB world No 3 and bronze medallists at the Tokyo Olympics, edged past Oman’s Hood and Mazin 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) to end the strong challenge and take the gold medal.


In the women’s event, Lebanon beat Qatar 2-0 in the final match to emerge champions.


The triumph meant Lebanon team progressed to the AVC Cup Continental Cup Finals while the hosts Qatar claimed silver and will move to compete in Phase 2. Jordan team finished in the third position.


After both men’s and women’s final events completed, Ali Ghanem al Kuwari, President of the Qatar and West Asia Volleyball Associations, handed over the awards and medals to the top teams. He presented the champions’ trophies to the Qatar men’s team and the Lebanon women’s side.
