Oman’s population is set to touch 5 million, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information. As of Wednesday (February 22), Oman has a population of 4,982,568 with Omanis reaching 2,876,682 (57.75 per cent) and expats 2,205,659 (42.26 per cent).


The NCSI bulletin also revealed an increase of 23,372 expatriates by the end of January 2023 compared to December 2022.


The Governorate of Muscat topped the list accounting for 40.1 per cent of the total population and Musandam lowest at 53,320.


There are 2,158,619 workers in total, with 773,786 Omanis and 1,384,833 expats. The government sector employs 392,872 people compared to 1,482,180 in the private sector. Bangladeshis accounted for the largest number of workers (669,554) followed by Indians (531,224) and Pakistanis (264,960).


By the end of January 2023, the number of newborns in the Sultanate of Oman is 6,062 (5,585 Omanis, 577 expats), a decrease of 438 from December 2022. In the same month, there were around 813 deaths (651 Omanis and 162 expats).


According to the most recent survey, infrastructural indicators revealed that the Sultanate of Oman has approximately 88 hospitals, up from 65 in 2012. In addition, there are 296 health complexes, 52 healthcare facilities (with beds), and 139 healthcare facilities (without beds). In general education, the number of schools increased by 704 in 2012 to 2,133 (government, private, international schools and special education). The total number of students stood at 898,073, with 72,845 teachers and 35,639 classrooms.
