Muscat: Oman beach soccer team stunned Saudi Arabia 5-2 in the opening friendly match in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan city on Tuesday. The match was part of the team’s ongoing abroad camp in Saudi Arabia which started on Sunday and will conclude on Saturday.

The camp aims to get the players ready for the crucial forthcoming assignment of the AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup Thailand 2023 which will take place in Pattaya from March 16 to 26.

The national soccer team’s triumph against hosts Saudi Arabia was registered after Omani domination in all the periods of the match. Khalid al Oraimi and Sami al Balushi scored two goals each while Mashal al Oraimi netted one.

Two more games will be played against Saudi Arabia and there was one match played late on Wednesday while the next match is scheduled to take place on Friday.

Besides the warm-up matches against the Saudi team, the team undergoes daily training sessions in Jizan city. Oman players are aiming high in the upcoming edition of the Asian finals event.

Oman are placed in Group D besides Palestine, Kuwait and Kyrgyz Republic. Hosts Thailand will vie for the title as they face 2006 champions Bahrain, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia in Group A. Two-time winners Islamic Republic of Iran will play against Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan placed in Group B.

Defending champions Japan will defend their title as they will play against Lebanon, China PR and Indonesia teams in Group C. The top three sides in the Asian event will join hosts United Arab Emirates at the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup 2023.

Oman team had defeated Iran 4-3 in the last preparatory match between both teams in Muscat while Iran edged Oman in the opening friendly game.

Playing more strong games against top Asian teams will position Oman’s squad in a strong technical position to show top performance in the major Asian championship.
