Kids to learn art, science, culture, technology this winter vacation

MUSCAT: The activities of the Children’s Museum winter programme, which lasts for four weeks began on Sunday. It targets the age groups from 6-16 years during the mid-year vacation period, during which various events are presented in several fields such as culture, science, engineering, technology, innovation, art, sports and health.


The first week of the programme is about ‘Our Culture, Our Identity’ and will continue until January 19. It will include 3 workshops namely palm-making, folk games, and winter tales. It aims to preserve the Omani heritage and develop manual labour skills, as well as endearing the cultural heritage to children by narrating folk tales.


The second week from January 22-26, targets health and sports sector, and includes basics in 5 episodes of football, volleyball, basketball, handball, and bowling. There will also be classes to improve personal skills, building work teams, social interaction, promoting happiness, teaching basketball skills and handball, in addition to spreading the sport of bowling in the Sultanate of Oman.


During the third week, from January 29 to February 2, it targets arts and fun through 5 workshops. These are Arabic calligraphy (Al Wissam calligraphy), watercolour painting, happiness bouquet, soap making, and origami art, and aims to discover and promote young people’s skills in the field of visual arts, encouraging them to highlight their artistic creativity.


This also introduces students to paper materials and the way to use them for artistic handicrafts, as well as introducing students to natural soap making methods and teaching students on how to make shapes using paper materials.


During the final, the themes will deal with science and innovation, and will be held from February 5 to 9. The programmes will involve 5 workshops, namely learning the alphabet programming ‘Matatalab’, observing the sun, as well as night observations of the moon, Saturn and Jupiter, and the world of ‘Fishertechnic’ for programming. — ONA
