Organ transplantation is a blessing for a large number of patients, especially those with liver and kidney failure.

One deceased organ donor can save up to eight lives.

The donation during life is for relatives up to the fourth degree or for non-relatives according to the conditions and approval of the Organ Transplantation Committee at the Ministry of Health. The donation after death comes after brain death or the cessation of the heart and breathing.

The organ donation process is legally regulated through the Regulation for the Transfer and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues issued by Ministerial Resolution No. 179/2018. It specifies conditions for donating human organs during life as well as after death. Article 4 stipulates the conditions for a living donor. It is permissible to donate to non-relatives if the recipient is in urgent need of transplantation, subject to the approval of the committee.

Article 10 stipulated the conditions for a donation from the deceased in the presence of a written will. An exception is organ or tissue that may be transferred from the deceased with the consent of his guardian, and that the death be finally proven with certainty, in accordance with the provision of Article 11 of this regulation.

Dr Nevin bin Ibrahim al Kalbaniyah, Head of the Organ Transplant Department at the Royal Hospital, and a member of the National Committee for Organ and Tissue Transplantation said, "The focus is on successful transplant operations in the Sultanate of Oman to enhance confidence, and the constant emphasis on the importance of preserving human rights and not seeking commercial organ transplants. It also involves using technology to provide correct and simplified information for both the donor and the recipient." Why do we keep these organs after death if they can help a person who has a chance to lead a new life.

People need not fear the idea of donating as the regulations confirmed that it is not permissible to perform transfers of human organs, tissues except in the health institutions specified by the technical committee. They must adhere to clinical protocols and medical ethics approved in this regard.

The medical personnel involved in transplanting human organs and tissues must be licensed by the MoH.

Anyone who wishes to donate organs can check with the Royal Hospital to know details.
