The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT) has been working on various missions to uncover new heritage and civilisations sites.

It may be noted that the Sultanate of Oman takes great care in the preservation and conservation of its heritage sites.

MoHT, in cooperation with an archaeological mission from the National Center for Scientific Research, is currently carrying out a survey and excavation work under a project called the ‘Exploration of the Omani Empty Quarter’ in the Wilayat of Al Mazyouna in the Dhofar Governorate, which dates back to prehistoric times.

The artifacts found from the Middle Stone Age (4,500- 6,500 BC) include grinding stones, arrowheads, and stone tools, decorative shells, which indicate that there were strong links between the people on the coast, which was 300 km from the site.

MoHT is also working at the archaeological site of Daba in Musandam Governorate.

The mission involved examining one-of-a-kind graves in terms of architectural construction and funeral furniture contents, which will provide important information about the area’s history and civil activities. The excavations resulted in the registration of more than five thousand artifacts at the site.

The ministry is making attempts to certify the site as a tourist shrine by establishing a visitor centre, which will house an exhibition, an artifact store, and a restoration factory.
