MUSCAT: The Technical Committee of Municipal Council’s Third Term Elections has said that all precautionary measures are in place to ensure the proper functioning of ‘Antakhib’ app used in the election process.

Today, the 18th of December, is Election Day for Omanis voting from abroad to select the members who will represent them at municipal councils in the wilayats of Oman.

Dr Ali bin Amer Al Shaithani, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology, Head of the Technical Committee, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that technical teams have been deployed to detect and address any challenges that might arise during the electoral process.

He hoped that the electronic election process, applied for the first time in the region via smart phones, would be a success.

Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Hadabi, Head of the Supervisory Committee of the Municipal Councils’ Third Term Election System, told ONA that the committee checked the efficiency of the related systems prior to the start of the electoral process, conducted via smart phones.

Al Hadabi pointed out that the electoral process runs electronically via ‘Antakhib’ app, without human intervention till the announcement of the results. “It is a leading experience par excellence in the region,” he added.

Eng Badr bin Sulaiman Awlad Thani, Head of the Online Voting Committee, said that voters’ keenness to elect their desired candidates from abroad reflects social awareness about the importance of the electoral process, which is made unique this time through the use of smart phones. — ONA
