MUSCAT, DEC 12

The annual Arab Administrative Development conference commenced on Monday under the auspices of the Governor of Muscat, Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi. The conference is a result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Labour and the Arab Administrative Development Organisation of the League of Arab States.

The two-day event will focus on sustainability in the administrative field.

The 21st edition of the conference is titled “sustainability of resources in light of climate change and ways to minimise impact.” The Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Labour for Human Resources Development, Sayyid Salim Musallam al Busaidi, reaffirmed the Sultanate of Oman's commitment to sustainability.

“The idea of sustainability constitutes a governing framework for all development plans and programmes in the Sultanate of Oman,” he shared.

Al Busaidi listed some of the challenges facing human capital.

“Climate change, technical progress and digital transformation are among the key challenges facing human capital, leading to the loss of various jobs. However, it will create other jobs in response to current and future changes.”

“In view of these challenges, Oman seeks to establish an effective national system that stimulates scientific research, innovation and creativity to build a science and knowledge-based economy and society, and to develop national talents with competitive capabilities and skills at the local and international levels. With continued emphasis on strengthening the focus of the labour market by building a skilled and productive workforce, with a positive working culture,” he added.

In his keynote speech, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit (pictured), explained the importance of competent administrations combating climate change.

“Achieving gains at an international level in combating the causes of climate change is important yet not sufficient in bringing about change at a national one. The matter requires the existence of effective and representative national government administrations that will be able to manage the available resources in a sustainable manner, in order to guarantee them for future generations.”

“We need to not look at climate change at a surface level. Which leads us in the wrong direction that holds one ministry responsible for protecting the environment. Instead, we need to develop comprehensive approaches and national strategies that will incorporate different sectors in their implementation,” elaborated Aboul Gheit.

The two-day symposium will focus on highlighting the significance of building an integrated approach to development management that ensures the sustainability of resources in the context of climate change in the Arab region by international protocols and conventions.

The Ministry of Labour recently announced the creation of the National Programme for Financial Sustainability and Financial Sector Development under instructions of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The programme will target the development of the financial sector through the development of initiatives and projects aimed at developing and strengthening the role of the banking sector and financing solutions. The first phase of the programme is set to start in the January of 2023 and aims to analyse the financial sector's current state, identify its main problems, and suggest solutions to the identified problems.
