MUSCAT: With an aim to plant 10 million wild trees, the Environment Authority (EA) is conducting a campaign to plant 15,500 mangrove seedlings in Al Wusta Governorate.

The mangrove plantation campaign was conducted in Khor Ghawi in the Wilayat of Al Jazir, said an official from the Environment Department in Al Wusta.

“The campaign will run from December 5 to 8. The campaign was part of a project which started in 2001 and aims to cultivate 1 million seedlings of mangrove trees along the Sultanate of Oman’s coasts within 20 years,” the official said.

EA has planted 4.75 million seeds of wild trees in different parts of the Sultanate of Oman, in cooperation with relevant authorities, as part of its ongoing efforts to plant 10 million wild trees.

According to official data, 4.75 million seeds of indigenous tree species have been planted by volunteers as well as by using drones in various regions. EA has also planted 480,000 wild trees, so far, including 70,600 mangrove trees.

EA, in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman, had launched the initiative in January 2020 to plant 10 million wild trees in the next ten years. The wild tree species include ghaf, sumr, sidr, shue, tiq, talh, mitan, sarh and alalan.
