Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman and the United States of America (USA) will hold official-level talks in Washington today.

Oman’s delegation will be chaired by Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Hamad al Busaidi, while the US side will be chaired by Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The talks will review the successes of recent cooperation on global, regional, and bilateral issues, in addition to devising new plans within the framework of the existing agreements between the two sides, such as the Free Trade Agreement of 2009, the science and technology agreement of 2016, and the strategic framework agreement of 2019.

The talks will also launch a new strategic dialogue between Oman and the USA.

The aims of this new dialogue are to build upon the strategic partnership between the two countries and develop concrete new joint initiatives, with an emphasis on realizing both countries' decarbonization objectives.

This dialogue will involve senior officials and leading experts, in separate sessions, each devoted to key topics identified as priorities for bilateral cooperation: namely energy, investment, trade, culture, and education.

In the first nine months of 2022, trade between US and Oman was worth $3.2 billion – equal to the whole year of bilateral trade in 2021 – with an almost $1 billion trade surplus in Oman’s favor.
