Shura council chairman receives IPU president

MUSCAT: Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura received Duarte Pacheco, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), at the council’s premises, on Monday.


They reviewed ways of enhancing cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and the IPU and achieving more coordination in efforts aimed at supporting international peace and security.


The chairman of Majlis Ash’shura commended the great role undertaken by the IPU and its support to the national parliament across the world as well as its keenness on supporting human rights, its constant endeavours to support sustainable development goals and its attempts to resolve current international issues.


Al Maawali briefed the guest about the stages of development of the Shura experience in the Sultanate of Oman and the specialization assigned to it in accordance with the Basic Statute of the State.


The president of the IPU praised the renaissance witnessed by the Sultanate of Oman under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik which was reflected in the development of Shura, and the presence of the Council of Oman in various international parliamentary events. He pointed to the active participation of the Council of Oman in discussions at the events organized by the IPU based on the vision adopted by the Sultanate of Oman and the principles of its foreign policy. He added that the Council of Oman recorded positive attitudes towards many issues including reducing wars and conflicts and tackling climate change. He indicated that his first visit to the Sultanate of Oman would open the doors for coordination and cooperation between Majlis Ash’shura and the Inter-Parliamentary Union in the upcoming stage. — ONA
