The Government of the Sultanate of Oman will implement a second Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer to help meet national data sovereignty requirements and establish a comprehensive disaster recovery process, this was announced yesterday by Oracle.

Earlier this year, ITHCA (Oman Information and Communications Technology Group) implemented the first Oracle Dedicated Regin Cloud@Customer and is now live in production. With the implementation of the second Dedicated Region, the Omani government is able to migrate its IT systems to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) while retaining physical control of its hardware and data to help meet the Sultanate’s data sovereignty requirements.

“The Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer is at the heart of our ‘National Data Centre Programme’ that aims to implement hyperscale cloud services across all Oman government entities to optimise and modernise the government’s IT ecosystem, and offer easy to access digital government services,” said Eng Said bin Abdullah al Mandhari, Chief Executive Officer of ITHCA Group.

“The second Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer will help us build adequate disaster recovery capabilities, achieve high levels of data and business resilience, and together with the first dedicated region, we have now established Oman’s first hyperscale data centre region,” he added.

Oracle has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITHCA to train and upskill Omani government executives and Omani government customers on OCI’s cloud services with live technical seminars and training labs. Oracle University’s training programme on OCI will also be offered as part of this agreement. The executives will receive OCI certifications following the successful completion of the training.

“The Oman Government’s National Data Centre Programme has set forth a clear vision for building a cloud-ready centralised infrastructure that allows the government to easily scale operations, save costs, and drive innovation securely. The Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer is a complete OCI cloud region in Oman ICT’s data centre, and with a second dedicated region, the Oman government has strengthened the foundation for the growth and development of Oman’s ICT ecosystem,”said Nick Redshaw, senior vice president – Technology Cloud, Middle East and Africa and UAE Country Leader, Oracle.

Following the implementation of the second Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer, the ITHCA Group will be able to offer all 100+ OCI cloud services as well as Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications to Oman government entities. The Oman government will also be able to move its business-critical workloads to the cloud, enabling operational efficiency and cost savings while ensuring compliance with the Sultanate’s data sovereignty requirements.

Designed for single-tenant usage, the Oman government’s Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer is a self-contained region where all data, including API operations and metadata, remain local to the region. The ITHCA will also have access to the tools needed to reliably run Oracle and third-party applications, create cloud native applications, and modernize existing ones with machine learning and modern cloud services.
