

MUSCAT: The female members of the State Council affirmed that the designation of October 17 as the Omani Women’s Day, constituted a significant milestone in the history of Omani women. This day embodies the attention accorded by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to women and his appreciation to their great national roles.
The Royal attention accorded to women culminated in their empowerment in various fields as the Omani women made their presence felt in various work fields and contributed to the huge development that took place in the Sultanate of Oman. Besides, the Omani women have gained excellent standing on the regional, Arab and international levels as regards empowerment in terms of ability to practice political, economic and social activities.
This year, the Omani Women’s Day comes as Omani women have further confirmation to women’s role and the Royal credit they have obtained. The role of the Omani women in the State Council is especially impressive as they have been active representatives of the people in the legislative body. There are 15 female members at the State Council in its current seventh term which indicates a significant role of women in the decision-making process.
Dr Badriyah bint Ibrahim al Shuhiyah, Deputy Chairman of the State Council, said: “In my view, the key for any woman to join new fields, fundamentally, has something to do with the confidence in her abilities and belief in herself and her intellectual giftedness. It is suitable to talk about their role as a mother and her ability of excellent upbringing of her children.”
Mariam bint Issa al Zadjaliyah, member of the Technology and Innovation Committee of the State Council, said that the Omani women have confirmed their ability of giving and perseverance under all circumstances. She added that the Omani Women’s Day embodies the Royal attention accorded to Omani women in recognition of their great roles in development. This requires us to intensify our efforts to devise ambitious and promising plans for supporting and empowering women in various fields.
Lujaina bint Mohsin al Zaabiyah, member of the State Council, said that every woman should do their best to preserve the women’s achievements by doubling their efforts in their respective fields. In addition, women should strive to make a greater presence at Majlis Ash’shura as well as ratchet up their roles in serving community and women issues.
Shaikha bint Ali al Nuaimiyah, member of Technology and Innovation Committee of the State Council, said: “Presently, Omani women assume greater roles in various scientific and practical fields. They have significant contributions in serving social issues and leading roles in all fields, not the least of which is the membership of the State Council.”
Sariyah bint Khalfan al Hadiyah, member of the Economic Committee of the State Council, said: “The Omani women were able to assume leading roles in various fields in the regional, Arab and international levels. What was achieved by the women is a source of pride for all Omani women. We have to aspire for the future with confidence and we have to ensure a more sustained women’s participation in serving the nation.”
