Oman finish second in Jordan tent pegging

Muscat: Oman national women’s team for tent pegging clinched the runners-up ‘silver medal’ in the International Women’s Tent Pegging Championship (Grand Prize), at Petra city in Jordan on Sunday.


The Omani women won 8 medals, including two gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Omani rider Ghanima bint Abdullah al Shukailiyah, won the title of best female competitor with the gold medal at the conclusion of competitions which were held during September 21 to 25. The championship featured the participation of 39 contestants from 14 countries -- Oman, Jordan, Sudan, Russia, Belarus, Britain, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Norway, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.


Oman team includes Ghanima bint Abdullah al Shukailiyah, Turkiah bint Mahmoud al Balushiyah and Amal bint Abdullah al Maskariyah. Other members are Mohammed bin Salem al Maliki as the team manager, Hilal bin Hassan al Balushi as team coach and Khamis bin Khadabakhsh al Balushi as an official for the mission.

The first day witnessed the opening ceremony of the tournament, and the competition started of the first round of the tournament of singles of spears, doubles of spears, where Oman national team managed to achieve the bronze medal at the team level with a total of 24 points, while South Africa won the gold medal at the team level with a total of 33 points and Sudan won the silver medal with a total of 31.5 points.


The competitions of the second day, the second round of the tournament, were through single sword, double sword, where the chances of Oman team were great by obtaining three medals. Oman won the gold in the team level with a total of 24 points, while India occupied the runners-up spot and Pakistan came third.


Also, Oman's Ghanima bint Abdullah al Shukailiyah won silver in the individual level, and Turkiyah bint Mahmoud al Balushiyah took the bronze in the same category.


The third day, the third and final round and the conclusion of the championship through the competitions of slicing and wedge with a spear for the individual, and lemon and wedge with the sword for the individual. Oman's Ghanima bint Abdullah al Shukailiyah bagged a silver medal in the individual level. In the team section, Oman claimed the bronze medal after South Africa achieved the gold and India won the silver.
