WTT contender 2022 begins in Muscat tomorrow

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is all set to host another edition of WTT contender at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat on Monday.


The six-day Muscat 2022 tournament, which is organised by the Oman Table Tennis Association (OTTA) in cooperation with WTT and ITTF, will attract more than 1,011 paddlers, referees, officials from 29 countries including Slovenia, Germany, Taiwan, South Korea, France, the US, Austria, Czech, Sweden, Japan, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Denmark, Ecuador, Iran, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Montenegro, Romania, Ukraine, Singapore, Poland, the Philippines, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and the hosts Oman.


The event offers a total cash prize of $75,000 in five disciplines including men's and women's singles/doubles and mixed doubles. The paddlers and officials from across the world began to arrive in Oman for the tournament on Friday. The remaining delegations will arrive on Sunday.



Seven paddlers from Oman will represent the hosts in this world-class event including Asaad al Raisi, Muhannad al Balushi, Ahmed al Riyami, Badar al Jassasi, Nasser al Balushi, Mohammed al Mutawa and Ghassan al Ghassani.


All of the national players will take part in the singles qualifications while the duo Asaad al Raisi and Muhannad al Balushi, and Badar al Jassasi and Mohammed al Mutawa will compete in the doubles competition. The playing system of all singles matches will be best of five games except for the semifinals onwards, which will be best of seven games.


All doubles and mixed doubles matches will be best of five games while all competitions are elimination knockout. As many as 25 referees from Oman and abroad will officiate in the event. Peter Bohumsky from Czech is the chief referee while Mahmoud Koraim from Egypt is the deputy referee. Muscat was the host city for several major TT events including WTT contender last February.
