Tent pegging tournament begins in Salalah today

A horse riding training course for youths will kick off the Equestrian Week in Salalah on Tuesday. The event is part of the khareef season activities organised by the Oman Equestrian Federation in cooperation with Dhofar Equestrian Committee, Dhofar Governor's Office, Dhofar Municipality, and the General Directorate of Culture, Sports and Youth.


The tent pegging tournament will be held for two days and will conclude on Wednesday. It will feature 10 teams from government cavalry units and private stables with a total of 40 riders competing for the championship title. The teams included The Royal Cavalry, ROP cavalry, the Cavalry of the Royal Guard of Oman, Al Nameer School, the S3 Stable team, Al Mudhaibi Equestrian Committee team, Sohar Equestrian Stud and the Dhofar Equestrian Committee team The event is part of the Oman Equestrian Federation's efforts to popularise equestrian sports and encourage young people to practice horse riding.


Responding to the great enthusiasm to learn equestrian sports, the federation launched a training course for young people, teaching them the basics of equestrianism, in cooperation with the Al Saada Equestrian School, from Monday to Thursday. As part of the Equestrian Week activities, an endurance race was held on Saturday at Khor Al Daharis Beach, over a distance of 100km. Around 47 riders from the various governorates of Oman took part in the event which was held under the auspices of Sayyid Munther bin Saif bin Hamad al Busaidy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Oman Equestrian Federation (OEF).


The endurance race consisted of three stages; the first stage was for 38 km, second was for 38 km, and third stage was for 24 km. OEA presented cars to the winner and runner-up, and cash prizes to 10 other top riders. The rider Saeed bin Jabr al Busaidy won the championship title with his horse “GIS”, owned by Omar bin Salim al Kharousi. The second place went to Mohammed bin Yarub Tabuk with the horse Wadah, owned by Musallam bin Salim al Busaidy. The third place went to Khalid bin Saeed al Balushi on “Al Mustafez”, owned by Munther bin Talib al Rabadni.


On Wednesday, the tent pegging championship will conclude along with traditional horse sports, horse riding, under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohsin al Ghassani , Chairman of Dhofar Municipality.
