On Friday, FC Nizwa looks to remember, honour, and celebrate the life of a promising young footballer, Muhammed Shahir, a well-respected member of their team and local community who had a cardiac arrest, and died while playing football. Club spokesman Savad Hussain said, “We wanted to celebrate a young man who was ‘larger than life,’ who was always there, always doing things ‘to the max,’ to remember him as a loving, and loved member of our local Omani and Indian communities. On July 29, we will have a family day of colouring pictures, drawing, art, cake-making, and Mehandi, or henna-drawing, and sharing memories with that mixture of sadness and joy that comes of the camaraderie of teams and friends. We want to raise funds on the day for his family, including his wife Shifana, and to contribute to the education of the daughter he unfortunately, never held in his arms.” “Then, on the 4th of August” he continued, “we are organising an inaugural ‘Shahir Memorial 7s Football Tournament’ for all teams at our FC Nizwa pitch. In this unique, and inspirational way of celebrating our young friend Shahir’s life, by engaging his beloved family, community, and football together, the club hopes to perpetuate his good nature and nurture his family’s future at the same time.”
