Depression to bring in heavy rains

Sunday saw rains in Al Sharqiyah South with Sur, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, Ras al Hadd receiving heavy showers, while Muscat experienced light rain over Yiti and other places.


“Many places in different governorates are to receive rains because of the presence of medium clouds over all of the Sultanate of Oman. But the most of the impact is expected on Monday and Tuesday'', said the official from Oman Met Office on Sunday.


The statement from Oman Met Office said, “The distance from the centre of the system to Oman coast is currently at 620 km and the distance of clouds of the system is 300 km away. The direction of the system is towards the coastal areas of Sea of Oman which chance of dissipating in a Pakistan — Iran coasts.”


The wind speed around the depression’s centre, at the time of the report, is estimated to be between 17 to 27 KT.



The latest weather maps and analysis of the National Multi-Hazards Early Warning Centre indicate that a tropical depression is located north east of the Arabian Sea near the coastal areas of Gujarat, India at latitude 23 N and longitude of 67 E.


On Sunday heavy and dark clouds gathered over most of the Sultanate of Oman with chances of rain showers with different intensity in South Al Sharqiyah, North Al Sharqiyah and parts of Muscat and Al Wusta. The rainfall is expected to range between 10 and 40 mm.


On Monday, the impact the system is expected to gradually extend to the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta with varying rainfall ranging between 30 and 80 mm.


While the cloud cover is expected over the Sultanate of Oman, isolated rain is to be experienced over parts of Muscat, North Al Sharqiyah, Al Dakhiliyah, South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi with rainfall of 10-30 mm.


The expected impacts are flow of wadis, wind between 10-30 knots which is 20 to 60 km/hr. There could be decrease in horizontal visibility during heavy rainfall. The sea state is termed as rough along the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea with maximum height of 4 metres and slight to moderate along Sea of Oman with a maximum height of 1-2 metres. On Monday there are chances of sea water extending over some parts of low coastal areas.
