Rains likely if low pressure turns into depression

The low pressure present over the Arabian Sea is expected to bring in rain in the forthcoming days in the Sultanate of Oman.


According to the first weather alert from National Multi Hazards Early Warning Center low pressure over the Arabian Sea issued on Friday the low pressure is located over north east of the Arabian Sea and that is near the coastal area of Gujarat, India. The wind speed is estimated to be less than 17 knots at the time of this report. It is likely to intensify depression on Friday or Saturday, said the weather alert.


The forecast also stated that it is likely to move westward to the coastal areas of Oman Sea within the coming two days which is why, according to the weather experts, the impact of this weather system is expected to start gradually by July 17 and continue for several days.


On Saturday, advection of high and medium clouds are expected to be present across most of the governorates of Sultanate of Oman with chances for isolated rain over Al Hajar Mountains and adjoining areas.


The sea state is rough along the Arabian Sea Coast with the wave height of 4m while it is moderate in the Sea of Oman with get 1.25m


According to the weather alert there are chances for seawater to extend over some parts of low lying coastal areas.


The rainfall might range between 20 and 60 mm and may result in overflowing in some of the wadis.


Friday saw the accumulation of cumulus clouds over the central and western Hajar Mountains, and continuous flow of clouds over parts of the coasts of the Sea of Oman and the coasts of the Arabian Sea.


On Friday afternoon, Oman Met Office said, rains of varying intensity, accompanied by active winds, were experienced in the wilayats of Mahdha, Dhank, Yanqul, Al Hamra and Bahla.


Thunder clouds activity was reported in parts of Dhofar Governorate and thunderstorms of varying intensity.
