MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman will join other countries to mark the World Drug Day which is celebrated on June 26 each year.

The World Drug Day is aimed at combating the threat of drugs being a shared responsibility between the community and the authorities concerned.

This year’s celebration includes exhibitions and awareness lectures carried out by the awareness team at the Directorate-General for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.

The Directorate-General for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, in cooperation with the other units of Royal Oman Police (ROP), achieved many accomplishments in terms of control and monitoring operations against drug dealers and smugglers. Over the past years, the anti-drug unit seized considerable quantities of drugs linked to international drug cartels.

The ROP has opened regional and international channels in order to enhance international cooperation and join world efforts in combating the phenomenon of drug trafficking.

Regarding the role of the community in combating drug abuse, the Directorate-General for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances affirmed that it is laying a great emphasis on the community as the security control is not enough and there should be communal cooperation with the authorities to curb the scourge of drug trafficking.

Drug smuggling crimes are punishable by death or life imprisonment in addition to a fine of up to RO 50,000 with the aim to stem drug abuse among the youth as official reports indicate that the age group 20-45 years is the most vulnerable to the threat of drug addiction. — ONA
