MUSCAT, JUNE 25

With new hardware arriving at Port of Duqm for installation and commissioning, port authorities say they are ramping up their preparedness to handle all kinds of cargo — general, bulk, liquids and containers — at the port’s commercial and government quays.

Reggy Vermeulen (pictured), CEO, said the company is also working intensively with the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) to enable the speedy installation of new cranes at the Container Terminal.

Early next year, the company will take delivery of Ship to Shore cranes, as well as rubber tyred gantry cranes, bringing the total number of heavy handling machines to 7 mobile shore cranes and 12 gantry cranes. These enhancements are being undertaken in close operational with Asyad Terminals — Duqm. At the same time, Port of Duqm is engaging with Asyad Group to enhance logistics operations at the gateway, he stated.

Importantly, the Port of Duqm is witnessing a sharp increase in activities, notably in the fisheries arena. Oman Fisheries Company, in particular, has increased the number of fishing vessels operating out of Duqm, while also ramping up their discharge of fish products for processing and eventual export through the port.

Additionally, the port is seeing an uptick in cargoes destined for the Oil & Gas and petrochemicals sectors, said Vermeulen.
