Muscat: Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, met recently the family of a person, whose organs were donated.

The family of the deceased had submitted the organ donation request after his death was confirmed by the medical staff, according to the Ministry of Health. Two kidneys were transplanted to two children suffering from kidney failure.

The Minister also visited the two children before they were discharged from the hospital last week.

Organ donation requests can be accessed through the AI-Shifa program.

The Royal Hospital has succeeded in transplanting kidneys in two Omani children – Durar and Aseel – who suffered kidney failure. A brain-dead person donated his kidneys to the children to give them a new lease of life.’

Salima Salem al Saadi, the mother of Durar, said, “My daughter had been suffering for six years. We thank God and the family of the person who donated.”

According to Abdullah Saleh al Balushi, father of Aseel, his child has had kidney ailments for the last eight years. “The transplantation has been successful and we thank God that we found a donor to relieve our suffering.”

Dr Neven bint Ibrahim al Kalbani, senior consultant of pediatric nephrology and head of Organ Transplant Department at The Royal Hospital, informed that such procedures are part of the national organ transplantation programme.

“The program involves the efforts of several hospitals in the sultanate to help patients find medically qualified donors to restore their lives again,” Dr. Neven said.

There are approximately 2,500 patients with renal failure on hemodialysis and 200 patients on proton dialysis in the sultanate. Fifty children under the age of 13 are on some form of dialysis, according to MoH data.
