Russia-Ukraine crisis: Oman calls for restraint

Muscat: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his accompanying delegation arrived on an official one-day visit to the Sultanate of Oman.


He also held a joint press conference with Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.


Main highlights of the press conference


Sergey Lavrov: The Omani side briefed us on the latest developments in Russian operations in Ukraine and its geopolitical dimension.


Sergey Lavrov: We agreed with the Omani side to expand the scope of bilateral agreements, including mutual exemption of visas for citizens of the two countries, and a cooperation agreement between the Russian Museum and National Museum Oman.


Sergey Lavrov: During my meeting with officials in the Sultanate of Oman, we discussed bilateral relations and economic cooperation, and discussed raising trade exchange between the two countries.


Sergey Lavrov: We appreciate the role of the Sultanate towards the Syrian issue and we believe that the time has come for Syria to return to the Arab League, and we believe that Oman is able to contribute effectively to this.


Sergey Lavrov: We affirmed to the Omani side our deep belief in the importance of activating negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis to reach a comprehensive solution to this historical issue.


Sergey Lavrov: The Russian Foreign Minister describes the Sultanate of Oman's position on the Russian-Ukrainian war as balanced.


Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi: The Sultanate is following with great interest the situation in Ukraine and calls on all parties to exercise restraint and resolve differences peacefully to avoid aggravating the situation.


Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi: The Sultanate supports all efforts that work to make negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue a success, and we do not blame any party for disrupting the negotiations, but we support dialogue and direct talks.


Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi: We discussed with the Russian side many issues of common interest, as well as a number of regional and international issues.


Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi: The Sultanate of Oman affirmed its commitment to the existing agreements with the OPEC Plus group.


Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi: Both sides will soon sign an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and an agreement on mutual exemption of visas for citizens of the two countries.
