MUSCAT: International Master Basheer Quadaimi won the top honours in the first Design Group Fide International chess tournament, which concluded on March 26.


The tournament was inaugurated on March 23 by Oman Cricket Chairman Pankaj Khimji.


Quadaimi outclassed the field with seven wins out of seven to emerge as the champion. The fight for the top five was pulsating with Hamood al Busaidy, a very promising Omani player, finishing second and Krishanu Sai was outstanding to finish third in a very toughly contested last round.


The curtain came down on the tournament with a glittering and festive prize distribution ceremony. Players from different category were awarded for their excellent performance with a trophy and certificate.


With over 72 players participating, the tournament saw players of age 7 to 50 years battling it out for the top spot. Lot of credit goes to the tournament arbitrators Musallam, Mrs and Mr Khalid for officiating the tournament in a systematic manner.


Tournament director Divakar along with tournament organiser and sponsor Damodar R Katti were honoured for their efforts to complete a successful event.


The organisers thanked the Oman Chess Committee for being part of the tournament and facilitating with all the gadgets as required to organise such an international tournament.
