Muscat: The Minister of Transport and Communication and Information Technology, Muscat: Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, said that no toll roads have been implemented to date in the Sultanate of Oman.

Replying to queries at Majlis Ashura that hosted him today, he said no toll will be levied on the existing routes, in the event that no alternative routes are found for the trucks, fees will be charged by mutual consent and as part of the agreement.

He said that alternative roads will not cause any financial burdens for citizens, and the focus will be on trucks only.

The minister said that work is ongoing to rehabilitate and maintain roads in various regions of the Sultanate, and the duration of the tender contracts have been changed from one year to 5 years, including those for dirt and asphalt roads.

The “Roads Maintenance” Law is going through many stages, and its promulgation will take some time, he said.

"There is a backlog in many projects that have been postponed since 2016 due to the financial situation and the current implementation is being carried out according to national priorities."

He said the response to the Empty Quarter road has been good and work is underway on some projects related to this road.
