Oman participates in GCC, Yemen blue transformation meeting

Dubai: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources took part on Wednesday in a meeting of GCC countries and Yemen on blue transformation and its contribution in fishing.


The event was hosted in the UN’s Forum during the Food, Agriculture and Livelihood week in Expo 2020 Dubai.


During the meeting, Eng Yaqoub Khalfan al Busaidi, the Ministry’s Undersecretary for Fisheries, pointed out that blue transformation is a modern global strategic vision adopted by FAO for the sustainability of healthy food and diverse water resources.


The vision, said Eng Yaqoub, also aims to secure the future of the people working in the blue economy.


He added that the strategy contributes to enhancing the effective management of fisheries to ensure their sustainability, and the development of food products by modernizing food chains, adding value and integrating digital solutions to reach different markets.


He confirmed that the fisheries sector in the Sultanate of Oman witnessed continuous growth over the previous years.


Fish production in 2020 reached 840,000 tonnes, comprising a rise of 44.5 per cent compared to 2019.


The value of production went up by 19 per cent to reach RO 364 million in 2020.


Further, Oman’s fish exports reach the markets of 66 countries all over the world, according to the statistics of 2020.
