Muscat: The firefighting teams from the Civil Defence Authority (CDAA) in the Governorate of Muscat managed to control a major fire that broke out in a building in the Ruwi area on Friday. Ten people were injured and provided emergency medical care at the site, while two of them were transferred to the hospital in a moderate health conditions.

Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out in a store in the Ruwi commercial district and the ambulance teams from CDAA's Darsait center rushed to the site and evacuated the building occupants.

Some occupants were unable to get out as smoke engulfed even the upper floors of the building.

As the efforts lasted several hours, authorities urged that all buildings, especially old ones, must follow maintenance procedures at all times.

"It is necessary to adhere to the requirements of civil defense in all facilities, periodic maintenance of fire alarms, follow-up of workers in commercial stores, and to ensure that unauthorized electrical connections are not installed and other aspects that may cause fires."
