Muscat: It takes combined efforts of all stakeholders to make a city great not only for the people who reside there but also for both short and long stay visitors.

These stakeholders involve not only the civic administrations and law enforcement agencies, but also people who stay there and extend hands to welcome any guests from anywhere in the world.

According to Numbeo, the Sultanate of Oman’s capital Muscat offers total immunity from being mugged or robbed, being assaulted, or attacked by armed robbers.

Numbeo gives top ranking when it comes to safety while walking alone during daylight (90.55 very high) and while walking alone during the night (76.40 high).

The country is also ranked very high for the quality of air, drinking water and accessibility, garbage disposal satisfaction, clean and tidy, night lights, comfortable to spend time in the city, greenery and parks.

The city has also been rated highly for the average distance taken to work or school (20.8 km).

The Observer recently spoke to some visitors in the capital for the first time, though they have been to several neighbouring cities on a few occasions.

Abdul Bhatti, a mediaperson from Pakistan, said, “I had a very limited knowledge about the Sultanate of Oman and Muscat in particular, even though it is a next-door country and many expatriates from different parts of Pakistan stay and work here. It has a lovely infrastructure, especially roads built by cutting mountains, and above all gives the freedom to walk on the streets safely at night, day and anytime.”

Pankaj Sharma, a technician from the events industry, echoed similar feelings. “This place gives a personal touch compared to other metro cities as one does not get the feeling of getting lost in the crowd. I get a feeling that the country is slowly but steadily getting back to normal in the post-Covid scenario.”

Not just visitors, even the long-time residents feel the same when they have to say a few words about the city. “As we all know, the city and country are also going through generational changes. It will never be the same as it was a few years or a decade back, but what is important is that the basic spirit of the people remains the same.”

All these results are due to tireless efforts of all sections of society that include men and women, government and non-government authorities.
