Muscat: As part of his current official visit to the Sultanate of Oman, Phillippe Leopold Louis Marie, King of the Belgians, on Thursday watched a visual presentation at Al Alam Palace about HYPORT Duqm, a major hub for renewable energy undertaken by OQ in collaboration with DEME company of Belgium.

The display was presented by Oman Investment Authority (OIA).

At the outset of the presentation, the monarch was welcomed by Abdulsalam Mohammed al Murshidi, Chairman of the OIA.

The visual presentation was introduced by Talal Hamid al Awfi, CEO of OQ, who said that the HYPORT project is scheduled to be set up in the area dedicated to alternative energy at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) on an area of 150 square kilometres.

The site will see the installation of a wind power generation plant and a solar power production facility, with an aggregate capacity of 1.3 gigawatts, to be executed in stages.

Al Awfi pointed out that the project will provide a set of benefits, including the conversion of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) into a global hub for the production of environment-friendly green hydrogen.

The project combines energy production and logistic activities, with emphasis laid on efforts to discard carbon and produce electricity.

Al Awfi explained that the Duqm zone boasts a variety of features that make it an attractive and competitive destination for renewable energy projects, thanks to its huge reservoir of renewable natural resources and its sound basic infrastructure that can be linked to national grid in future.

Al Awfi expressed the Sultanate’s drive to keep up its stature as a regional leader in implementing clean energy projects to accelerate efforts for transformation in the field of energy. Al Awfi added that, in the first phase, the project will set up a hydrogen production unit with a capacity of 250-500 megawatts in Duqm.

The project, scheduled to start operation in 2026, is designed to meet global demand for green hydrogen.
