Getting comfortable with discomfort

minus
plus

Discomfort is an interesting feeling because we’ve often label it as a negative way of being and feeling. None of us want to be uncomfortable. The thing with discomfort is that it is not always bad. Sometimes, when you feel uncomfortable there is more going on than meets the eye.

Discomfort its not something we should be trying to avoid all the time. If you want to live life to the fullest it’s so important to realise the value of the full spectrum of emotions that we get to feel as humans. There is something to learn from every experience and feeling. If we were always happy or always comfortable we would never really grow. Growth happens when we step outside our comfort zone, when we ask questions when we dare to go beyond what is well known to us.

Discomfort is sometimes a sign that you are about to do something big, someone new, something that could change your life. Think about all the instances when you’ve felt uncomfortable in the last year. Now, think about all the things you did despite your discomfort that you are now proud of yourself for doing. When we think about discomfort as a gateway to growth we open a whole new way of being and feeling.

It is so normal for us to be uncomfortable when we try something new. It is so normal to feel nervous before a job interview. It is so normal to doubt yourself before you making a life changing decision. Discomfort is our bodies way of telling we are about to do something risky, something outside our comfort zone, something that will be hard. It’s important to be aware of the feelings. They exist to protect us. It’s also just as important for us to remember that these feelings don’t have to stop us from living our lives.

Discomfort gets to be a guiding light in your life, if you choose to see it that way. You can choose to look at discomfort as a sign that you are stretching, growing, and changing. You get to choose how much of that you want to experience in your life.

Don’t let discomfort stop you.

Discomfort is not always bad. It’s sometimes a sign that you are about to do something big, someone new, something that could change your life.

The only way you can experience that change is if you are first willing to jump into the discomfort, into the unknown.
