Muscat: After a 16-year ban, Al Bashayer Meat Company, Oman’s first and the region’s largest integrated red meat project, received the first shipment of livestock from the Republic of Kenya with a total of 16,000 goats and sheep.

The resumption of shipments came after efforts made by the government of the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources (MAFWR) in providing red meat.

With an aim to discuss export conditions and the mechanism for applying the standards of veterinary quarantine, a number of specialists from the ministry paid some visits to the Republic of Kenya to ensure that the imported livestock are free of diseases and they are fit for local and global consumption.

Initially, it was agreed to import about 40,000 heads of live livestock in the first phase between the Sultanate of Oman and the Kenyan government. This shipment is part of several shipments agreed upon with the Kenyan government, which will come successively.
