Muscat: The Ministry of Health, represented by Al Nahdha Hospital, organised a conference on Nutrition and Cancer Diseases.

The event was organised under the auspices of Dr Hilal al Sabti, Executive President of Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB).

Dr Eiman al Hinai, Head of Clinical Dietary Department at Al Nahdha Hospital said that in 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded 18.1 million new cases of cancer worldwide.

She added that WHO expects the number to reach between 29 and 37 million cases by 2040, and that cancer cases will increase by 81% by 2040 in low- and middle-income countries due to insufficient resources for prevention.

The conference aimed at exchanging knowledge and expertise with oncologists specializing in oncology-adapted nutrition. It also reviewed recommendations on nutrition and cancer diseases.

The conference sought to raise dietary awareness in Oman to reduce the incidences of these diseases. The event spotlighted the role of nutrition in colorectal cancer in Oman, methods of prevention and treatment of children and adults with cancer.

The conference shed light on the ideal therapeutic nutrition for the treatment of such cancers according to age, gender and other health-related factors. Some cases that have recovered from cancer in the Sultanate of Oman have also been highlighted. --ONA
