Researchers in Denmark are thrilled by the discovery of gold said to be around 1,500 years old and described as one of the largest, most valuable and most beautiful treasures in Danish history, the museum association of the city of Vejle said on Sunday.

An amateur archaeologist discovered the 22 pieces - which probably date back to the 5th century and have a total weight of 945 grammes -with the help of a metal detector.

The discovery was made near Jelling, which was once an important hub and now a key archaeological site in Denmark.

The find is mainly finely decorated medallions, but there are also some Roman coins that were made into jewellery. Some pieces have motifs and runic inscriptions that could refer to rulers at the time, but make reference to Norse mythology.

The treasure will be exhibited in Vejle from February 3, 2022.

Danish archaeologist Morten Axboe compares the significance of the artefacts to the so-called Golden Horns of Gallehus, two drinking horns that are among the most famous objects in Danish history.

His colleague Peter Vang Petersen from the National Museum in Copenhagen spoke of a "dream discovery" with exceptional size, quality and workmanship.

The museum association said "the fascinating journey of gold tells us a lot about the European continent, which was already closely connected by trade and war in the Iron Age."

In Denmark, the Iron Age is roughly defined as the years from 500 BC to the beginning of the Viking Age around 775 AD. — dpa
