The Giant Trevally is a fish widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans, Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea among others. According to Naveed Ahmed Bakhtiar, a fishing enthusiast, people from around the world travel to the Sultanate just to catch this fish. “That is offshore fishing, but catching a Giant Trevally from the shores is very rare and it happened to us recently.”

Naveed is a Pakistani expatriate based in the Sultanate who has been managing a team of fishing enthusiasts called ‘No Limits’ since 2012.

Recently, while driving towards the Sur, near Qalhat for fishing from the rocks, the team, which included Bino, Sanish, Ismael and Prashant, came across the Giant Trevally during one of their explorations on July 19. “ But it took some time to get hold and bring it to the shores.”

He added, “We normally always attempt to release bigger fish back in the water but this time could not manage to do so on time as the fish was completely exhausted and injured. I was very happy with my catch but equally sad that I could not return it back to the water.”

He said that for a week his phone was flooded with congratulatory messages from anglers all over Oman.
