Indian cricket great Sourav Ganguly was impressed by the Oman Cricket Academy facilities and the Al Amerat pitch where Oman is supposed to host the Group B matches of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

“The pitch and ground look nice and different. There is a greenish touch to it. Much similar to English country side conditions,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told reporters after a quick inspection of the pitch and related facilities at the Oman Cricket Academy.

Now in an administrative role after being one of the most successful captains of Indian team, Ganguly fondly called as ‘Dada’ (elder brother in Bengali), said he is enjoying his new role as the chief of one of the world’s richest sports bodies.

“The two roles (Indian captain and BCCI head) are both very challenging in its own terms. These responsibilities have positive and negative aspects as well. Anyway, I have enjoyed the earlier role and looking for the same in the present role too,” said Sourav, who was nicknamed ‘God of the Off Side’ for his exploits through the off side with elegant stroke play square of the wicket and through the covers.

Ganguly, who also visited the indoor practice facilities at the Oman Cricket Academy, appreciated Oman Cricket for the efforts.

Oman Cricket Chairman Pankaj Khimji promised a complete makeover of the Al Amerat Ground before the high-profile event from October 17.

“You will see all the upgradation regarding lighting and other spectator facilities in two months’ time. None of us would be able to recognise this place during the World Cup as the ground and associated facility will get complete makeover,” he promised the ICC and BCCI delegation.

‘PREFERENCE FOR SPECTATORS’

ICC Acting CEO Geoff Allardice said the global cricket body will give preference for allowing spectators for the event in Oman.

“We would like to get permission for allowing at least a small number of spectators for the World Cup. However, this will be decided according the government instructions and the latest pandemic situation of the country,” Allardice said.

He said the event will leave a legacy for the sport in the Sultanate.

“It will be a historic occasion with Oman hosting a major World Cup event. It will leave a legacy for the game in the country.”

“Hopefully many more local youngsters will take up the game in Oman and we (ICC) expect a good impact in the region too,” the former cricketer with Australian state Victoria said.

Allardice said the GCC region has been involved in cricket for quite long time and Oman has especially made big strides in the past decade.

“It is only time that Oman has got the opportunity as Oman Cricket has carried out lot of development projects in earnest.”

He said the Amerat Ground will get transformed to a World Cup venue soon.

“In two months’ time, the lighting will be upgraded to the standard for the live TV coverage along with temporary spectator stands and other facilities needed for the global event,” the ICC CEO added.
