Hockey fans ecstatic after Oman wins bid to host FIH Hockey 5s World Cup

Hockey lovers in the Sultanate expressed their joy after the announcement from FIH that Oman’s capital city Muscat will host the first ever FIH Hockey 5s World Cup (Men and Women) in January 2024. It was an especial day for everyone as this mega event will map the Sultanate’s hockey globally.


Oman Olympic Committee chairman, Sayyied Khalid bin Hamed al Busaidi, congregated Oman Hockey family and appreciated their top efforts as he tweeted in his personal twitter account after unveiling the host nation for the world-class event and said: ”Great appreciation to FIH and Asian Hockey Federation for granting Oman the honour of hosting the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup in 2024. My sincere congratulations to Oman Hockey Association (OHA) and the hockey family for this prestigious achievement that Oman deservers for its long lasting Hockey heritage,”.


Oman’s hockey legend and the ambassador of Oman’s bid for the world-event, Tarmah Abdul Hussain al Ajmi, congratulated the whole domestic sports family for hosting this prestigious event. “ Congratulations to the Sultanate and OHA board directors for hosting FIH Hockey 5s World Cup. I hope there should be a proper and extensive plan for the national team’s preparation for the top-ranked event,” he said in a tweet.


Tayyab Ikram, Chief Executive and Secretary General of Asian Hockey Federation (AHF), affirmed that the Sultanate has full capability and ability to deliver a unique inaugural edition of FIH Hockey 5s World Cup.


“In this occasion, it is my pleasure to congratulate HM Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and HH Sayyied Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Hockey and sports lovers in the Sultanate. At personal level, I am very proud that Oman took the responsibility for this high profile event and hosting of 16 teams per gender (Men & women),” he added.


The commission member at International Olympic Committee (IOC) pointed out that everyone is assured that the Sultanate government will work hard for the success of the prestigious championship.


“Oman had managed to host many top hockey events in the years ago successfully. I am assured that the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup will be a great success and will be organized with the utmost professionalism,” he concluded in a statement to asiahockey.org website.


Oman’s hockey sports will take a giant stride through hosting the first ever FIH Hockey 5s World Cup (Men and Women) earlier in 2024. It is expected that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth will unveil the main organising committee members for this mega event. This committee will have members from different government and private sector entities and it will be responsible for facilitating all the needs and requirements towards organising this world-class event including construction of the new stadium which will be built at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex with the existing venue which will be used as a training pitch for the participating teams.
