Majlis office discusses Omanisation of top positions in finance sector

MUSCAT: The Office of Majlis Ash’shura approved a number of monitoring tools which included expressed desires regarding the nationalisation of the upper leadership jobs in the banking and financing sector, the challenges facing the fishing sector, enhancing and diversifying the sources of sustainable financing for the public and the private media.


The Office of Majlis Ash’shura held its 21st ordinary meeting of the second annual sitting of the ninth term (2019-2023), under the chairmanship of Shaikh Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Majlis Ash’shura Chairman.


The Office approved a request for briefing presented to the minister of finance regarding the public debt and another request for briefing to the chairman of Oman Investment Authority (OIA) related to the implementation phases of the medical city.


Besides, the Office looked into a number of expressed desires presented by Council members regarding several issues including the conditions of eligibility for electricity and water subsidy in the National Subsidy System, the coverage of agricultural and fisheries activities by the electricity and water subsidy, determining the Omanisation rate in the economic diversification sectors in accordance to the directives of the 10th Five-year Development Plan. The Office decided to refer them all to the Economic and Financial Committee for study.


The Office approved a number of questions presented by members of Majlis Ash’shura including a question to the minister of education about the ministry’s development projects in the 10th Five-Year Development Plan in addition to the question to same minister regarding the inclusion of the Palestinian cause in the national curricula.


The Office approved a parliamentary question to the minister of housing and urban planning regarding the maintenance of the residential units as part of the housing assistance programme. Also, the Office approved a question to the minister of labour about the employment of 38,000 foreign employees with bachelor’s degrees in a single year. The Office approved a request for briefing presented to the chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority about the increase in the prices of construction materials in the local market.


The Office of Majlis Ash’shura reviewed a number of reports of the standing committees including a report from the Legislative and Legal Committee on the amendment of the Civil Status Law, and the Youth and Human Resources Committee’s report about the nationalization of the top leadership positions in the banking and financing sector.


In addition, the Office viewed a set of reports presented by the Economic and Financial Committee including a report about creating a modern method (a database) for collecting the due amounts from land usufruct contracts and reducing taxes on the innovation-supporting companies.
