MUSCAT: The State Council’s Education and Research Committee held its 15th regular meeting of the second annual convening under the chairmanship of Mohammed bin Hamdan al Toobi, committee chairman, on Wednesday.
The committee hosted Engineer Omar bin Hamdan al Ismaili, CEO of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) within the context of the committee’s study on the reality, policies and legislations of distance education in the Sultanate.
The committee discussed with the CEO and officials of TRA a number of topics related to the study including the strategies of TRA to provide the infrastructure required by the telecom and IT sector in order to realize the Sultanate’s digital transformation and e-government strategies as part of the Oman Vision 2040, the legislations and polices adopted by the authority to set up the government’s unified network, providing broadband services to the entire population of the Sultanate and the plans and programmes approved by the Authority to ensure sustainable e-services.
The committee discussed with the Authority’s officials, ways by which the TRA will support the educational sector in general and the distance education in particular as well as the challenges facing the infrastructure of the telecom and IT sector on which the distance education services are based. Also debated was the suggestions and recommendations of the TRA for developing the infrastructure and networks to meet the requirements of distance education.
