Covid-19 cases are rising after a brief fall in the beginning of May, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.

With 1,258 new cases of the Covid-19, the total number of registered cases in the Sultanate went up to 218,271.

The ministry also announced 14 new deaths in 24 hours, bringing total deaths to 2,370 since the pandemic outbreak.

The number of admissions in hospitals is increasing every day. During the past 24 hours, the number of inpatients reached 124, bringing the number of inpatients to 824 cases, including 265 in intensive care units.

The ministry called on all citizens and residents to constantly clean hands with soap and water, avoid touching the face, nose, mouth and eyes, follow healthy habits when sneezing and coughing, and fully adhere to the instructions for social and physical distancing issued by the Supreme Committee and the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, the vaccination campaign for the general diploma students and teachers is in progress.

The ministry has decided to continue with vaccination campaigns in phases based on the availability of vaccines in accordance with the National Strategy for Immunisation against Covid-19.

Officials said the expected number of vaccine doses to reach the Sultanate is 1.25 million. Till Saturday, the Sultanate had been receiving 200,000 doses every week. The ministry seeks to cover the entire target population with the anti-coronavirus vaccine, aged 12 years and above, equivalent to 70 per cent of the population by the end of the year.

By the beginning of next week, new groups will be vaccinated, according to an integrated implementation plan for immunisation during June, the ministry stated.

The Sultanate will receive one million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, and 148,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, noting that the vaccination campaign aims to immunise all employees of the state’s administrative apparatus, security and military authorities, and all groups of society over 45 years old, during June.

Badr bin Saif al Rawahi, Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases Control at the Ministry of Health, confirmed during a TV interview that “the ministry buys vaccines, which have been proven safe."

He ruled out any delay in vaccine arrival in the Sultanate. "By the end of June, the Sultanate will succeed in vaccinating 30 per cent of the population," he said.
