MUSCAT: Students of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) secured second place globally among nine international universities in the “Imperial Barrel Award” competition organised by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). The Omani team included Salma bint Abdullah al Rahbiyah, Marwa bint Mohammed al Hadhramiyah, Thuraya bint Ahmed al Harthiyah, Said bin Khalid al Farsi (geoscience specialisation, College of Science), and Iman bint Mohammed al Fazariyah (oil and gas engineering specialisation, College of Engineering). The team was coached by Khalil bin Juma al Hooti, Lecturer at the Geoscience Department, College of Science, and Dr Mohammed Farfoor, Assistant Lecturer at the same department. The contest offers the participants an opportunity to explore geosciences and engage in actual application of petroleum engineering sciences that they studied. The students’ work simulates the operations of oil exploration companies.
