GENEVA: The Sultanate stressed the importance of preserving chapter VII as a permanent item on the human rights agenda until the demise of the occupation and called upon peace-loving countries to participate in it because it is of great importance in highlighting violations committed in a systematic and widespread way against the Palestinian people.

This came in a statement by Abdullah bin Nasser al Rahbi, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate to the United Nations Office, and other international organisations in Geneva, within the context of the general discussion of chapter 7 in the agenda of the 34th session of the Human Rights Council, which is held at the United Nations Office in Geneva on February 20 to March 24, entitled ‘Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied since 1967.

Al Rahbi affirmed the Sultanate’s position on the centrality of the Palestinian cause to the stability in the Middle East.

Adding that without a comprehensive and just solution to this issue, it is difficult for the region to witness security, peace and coexistence.

He reiterated the firm positions of the Sultanate regarding the Palestinian cause, affirming that the comprehensive, just and lasting peace can only be achieved through Israel’s full withdrawal from all the Arab territories occupied in 1967 and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab peace initiative and the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.

At the end of the speech, Al Rahbi, Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organisations in Geneva, stressed that the Israeli settlements on the Arab territories are illegal under international law and constitute a major obstacle to achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region, stressing the Arab identity of all occupied Arab territories including the Syrian Golan and the Lebanese territories. — ONA
