Oman university team set for Asian tourney in South Korea

MUSCAT, September 1 - Oman national university football team will travel on Sunday to take part in at the second edition of the Asian University football tournament to be held in South Korean city of Taebaek from September 5 to 14. Ten teams will feature in the tournament including Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan A and B teams, South Korea A, B and C teams, South Africa team (instead of Iran team who pulled out) and the Sultanate team. Oman team will be represented by players selected from more than 20 universities and colleges. Oman, placed third in the last edition, are keen to improve the record this time.


“We hope for success in this edition of the Asian tournament as Oman team is the only Arabian and GCC country taking part. Our main target is to reach to the top three. Tough competitions are expected as many Asian ranking teams are taking part in the tournament,” Dr Salim al Oraimi (pictured), chairman of Oman University Sports Committee, said. “We are participating in this edition with new young faces except Khalid al Yahyai, who participated in the last edition. I believe he will share his experience to his colleagues,” Al Oraimi added.

Oman national university football team completed all the preparations as the team had series of internal camps recently. Oman University team is guided by coach Abdulaziz al Habsi, as head coach of the team while Hilal al Salmi, is the assistant coach. Oman University team completed the first part of internal camp before Eid al Adha break. During that camp, Oman held Fanja club 1-1 in a friendly match. Al Abd al Noufli netted for Fanja team, while Ali al Mujaini scored the draw goal for national university team.
