Nepalese dance forms enthral audience

Nepal, a landlocked central Himalayan country in South Asia is rich with traditional music with music and dance being both fundamental parts of all rituals, celebrations, festivals and social occasions.


With more than 50 ethnic groups in a population of 26.4 million, Nepalese music has diverse genres and ethnic music forms, some of it influenced by music from other regions of the world.


These diverse genres include Dohori, Aadhunik geet, and Classical while Ethnic music is consists of Newa, Gurung, Kirat, Tamang, Magar, Sherpa, Maithili and Tharu music.


In the recently concluded Muscat Festival, performances incorporating different genre of Nepali music took centre stage conquering the hears of the audience with their unique, mellifluous executions.


The closing ceremony has seen Nepali folk dances by various Nepali communities in Oman and distribution of appreciation letters for the volunteers participating in the Nepal stall as well as a token of love to the three guest Ambassadors of different countries.


Bednidhi Acharya performed a folk dance “Maruni”, Bhimlal Giri performed a solo dance to the song “Budho Kisan” wearing a Nepali farmer’s garbs carrying traditional equipment for ploughing. Nanu Gurung, on the otherhand, performed to the tune of “Nepalki chori”. All the guests praised the efforts of Nepal Embassy in promoting the country’s tourism and culture through such participation.


“We are thankful to the Muscat Municipality, the Festival Committee and the volunteers for their efforts in conducting the festival smoothly and introducing Nepal to the rest of the world”, Sarmila Parajuli Dhakal, Ambassador of Nepal to the Sultanate said.


Nepal Stall was one of the major attractions in Muscat Festival. Visitors admired Nepal’s natural beauty, Nepali handicrafts especially “khukuri” and Nepali Tea. More than 5000 visitors visited Nepali stall and enquired about Nepal and expressed their interest to visit Nepal. Hence, the participation in the festival has become one landmark activity for Nepal Embassy to promote Nepali tourism and culture.
