NBC Mashura initiative highlights intellectual property and trademark

MUSCAT: The National Business Centre (NBC), which falls under the umbrella of the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), organised on Monday at Riyada Incubator the first session of Mashura initiative in 2018. Mashura comprises a series of sessions that focus on providing specialised business consultancy to the incubated companies. Organised in cooperation with the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Mashura sessions hosted officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry who highlighted intellectual property and commercial law in the presence of a number of entrepreneurs and owners of small and medium enterprises in the Sultanate.

The officials explained that intellectual property rights play a significant role in the economic and social development of any society, as “No country in our time can imagine itself without a legal framework for the protection of a property,” the officials emphasised. The officials also referred to Royal Decree No 67/2008, promulgating the Law on Industrial Property Rights. The session also highlighted the concept of trademark. The officials pointed out that a trademark aims at identifying products of a particular source from those of others; and a service mark aims at identifying and distinguishing the services of a company from those of others. — ONA
