While warning against littering in public places, the Muscat Municipality said it seeks to partner with the community in raising awareness among citizens, residents and visitors on the importance of maintaining a beautiful and clean Muscat through disposal of waste at designated places. The municipality said action will be taken against people who litter and throw waste in public places such as parks and beaches. The warning comes amid reports of trash being thrown by visitors at holiday spots. An international traveller has released a video criticising the public apathy towards the efforts to keep the city clean.

The municipality said the decision (2017/55) specifies administrative penalties for violations. Offenders can be fined RO 1,000 for throwing trash in public places. The fine will be doubled for repeat offenders, it warned. The municipality said it has been taking daily efforts in cleaning up the city and serving its population, but an “indifferent attitude from a section of the community increases burden” on its human and financial resources.
