The Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) on Thursday marked the graduation of 464 young Omanis from the company-sponsored training schemes to take up full-time employment. An event was held to honour their success under the auspices of Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council.
The job-seekers have qualified to work in a variety of trades, including scaffolding, mechanics, pipe-fitting, steel-fixing, storekeeping, metal sheet fabrication and vehicle maintenance and repair. The batch comprises 75 welders who have been trained up to the 6G level — the highest international standard, and 17 women, who will work in vehicle sales and social media.
This is the eighth batch of trainees to graduate from PDO’s National Objectives Programme, which has created over 40,000 jobs, training and redeployment opportunities for Omanis since its launch in 2011.
The company aims to generate 50,000 such opportunities between 2017 and 2019 in consultation with the Ministry of Manpower, the National Training Fund and the Public Authority of Manpower Registry.
PDO has been working with partners beyond its natural boundaries, including aviation, real estate, fashion and hospitality as part of the efforts to diversify the Sultanate’s economy.
Abdul Amir Abdul Hussein al Ajmi, PDO External Affairs and Value Creation Director, said: “Creating employment opportunities for Omanis is a national priority and PDO is determined to do all it can to support His Majesty’s Government in this noble cause.”
The graduates, who underwent training for 24 months at six training institutes, will now take up work with 27 different employers, including Galfar Engineering and Contracting, Oman Shapoorji, Suhail Bahwan Group, Trade Links and Services, Voltas Oman and Moosa Abdul Rahman Hassan.
The event featured 24 who picked up the Best Trainee Award trophies and certificates. — ONA
