MUSCAT, Jan 8 - Eighteen candidates are competing for positions on the five-member Board of Directors of Indian Schools in Oman, voting for which is scheduled to be held on January 13, it was announced at a press briefing here yesterday.

The ballot, set to take place from 8 am to 5 pm, will be supervised by an election panel headed by Dr Sathish Nambiar, Shakeel K M, Babu Rajendran, Dileep Somani and Padmini Atal.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education will also be on hand during the election and counting process.

Parents of students of Indian School Muscat are eligible to choose their representatives to the Board of Directors. Voters are required to furnish their residency card, along with the GR number of their wards, when collecting their ballots.

The names of parents eligible to vote in the upcoming election — the fourth in the series since 2011 — have been published on the notice board of ISM, as well as on the website — ismelections.org.

In the fray are: Ajit K Panicker, Bheeem Nilkantrao Hangarge, Deenadayalan Sundarajan, Mohammed Sabir Raza Faizi, Dr Baby Sam Samuel Kutty, Girish Krishnan Nair, S A Gururaj, Jijo Kandanthottu Job, Kumar Vembu, K L Naidu, Nitheesh Sundaresan, A L Pangalan, Rabeka R, Rajiv Vaikattil Sridharan, Selvichen Jacob, Sirajudeen Nhelat, Smitha Surendran and Srikanth Viswanathan.

Speaking at the press briefing, Dr Sathish Nambiar cited instances of parents complaining to the election panel that some candidates had sought votes based on promises to, among other pledges, to reform the fee structure, improve infrastructure in schools, and so on.

“The Election Commission hereby advises parents not to be swayed by such tall promises, as all policy decisions with respect to any important matters relating to school administration are generally proposed by the school management committees and decisions on such proposals are taken by the 15-member Board of Directors based on a

simple majority,” it added in a statement.
