Asian expatriate fined RO 17,000

MUSCAT: An Asian expatriate was fined RO 17,000 by the Court of First Instance in Izki recently under the Food Safety Law for selling and storing expired goods. According to the complaint, a consumer bought a carton of chicken of a branded company and found the products were of a different variety that what was mentioned on the box. The weight didn’t match, while the chicken had exceeded the sell-by date.
He immediately approached the consumer forum, which visited the company’s headquarters to verify the authenticity of the complaint. Inspectors found 29 cartons of expired chicken with manipulated information. The case was referred to the Court of First Instance in Izki.
The accused will be deported on completion of the sentence.
